MADLOM is a non-profit arts center and interdisciplinary laboratory dedicated to the creative development of each student through music, dance, theater, spoken word, film and video. We strive for a developmentally appropriate, rewarding and joyful process for each student, with an emphasis on artistic literacy, creative expression, leadership and ultimately, self-confidence.
MADLOM offers classes for students of all ages, and abilities in a non-competitive, collaborative environment, including integrated classes for special needs students. The Montclair Academy of Dance and Laboratory of Music was founded in 1998, by Artistic Director Maya Milenovic Workman (interdisciplinary media artist and choreographer) and Executive Director Reggie Workman (Legendary Jazz Musician, educator). We are dedicated to enriching the lives of children, teens, and adults through the arts. We focus on creative development through dance, music, theater, and visual arts. Our teachers provide established dance and music techniques and strive for a developmentally appropriate and rewarding process for each student, with an emphasis on creativity, critical thinking, and confidence. A partnership is cultivated between students and teachers to develop artistic movement, music and literacy skills, and individual creative expression. This ability to look creatively at anything and find fresh inspiration in everything is a goal of our work. Leonardo Da Vinci says: "It should not be hard for you to stop something and look into the stains on walls, or ashes of a fire, or clouds, or mud or like places in which ... you may find marvelous ideas." Milenovic Workman started leading young people as a choreographer/ dancer/ director in 1978 in her native Slovenia. She studied Martha Graham dance technique and choreography at the London School of Contemporary Dance under Bob Cohan, Jane Dudley and Nina Fonaroff. In1982 she continued her studies in NYC, with Merce Cunningham, Chris Komar, Robert Kovich, Ruth Barnes, etc. She has worked internationally as a choreographer and educator in Slovenia, Italy, England, Croatia, Serbia, and the United States. She developed a program, Eight Steps To Creativity Moving Theater and Choreography specifically for ages five and up. Her main choreographies: The Closed Door, Fragments in Fabula, Impressions, Moon Above Mississippi, Tristan and Isolda, Jokasta, Clytemnestra, The Night Bird. In her latest project I Hear With My Eyes, she faces the audience with Psychology of Deafness and is transitioning to applied moving theater for wider use of stage practice in a specific social context and environment. Ms Milenovic Workman believes in importance of work with students, especially during the critical early years when there is a window of opportunity for creative abilities to be cultivated and imagination to be unleashed.
